For people who want to connect socially with other members. We’ll divide the time by the number of attendees that show up for each session. Use your allotted time as you wish: share an excerpt of your work "open mic style," update us on your writing life/challenges, consult “the hive” on an issue in your writing.

All Social Hours will be held on the first Tuesday of the month.

Speculative and genre fiction can be challenging to provide feedback on if you have not been immersed in similar reading and writing. This series offers an opportunity to explore worlds completely different from our own and receive feedback from other open-minded genre writers.

What is genre fiction? Genre fiction is any piece of literature that follows a discrete formula to advance the story. Readers of genre fiction, such as romance or mystery, expect it to follow certain formulas, tropes, structures, and/or archetypes.

What is speculative fiction? Spec-Fic is an umbrella term for fiction that pulls away from everyday reality. Speculative is a catch-all for genres such as fantasy, science fiction, magical realism, paranormal, horror, and anything else beyond the ordinary world.

Instructor Bio:

Rachel Gerlach-Matt is the author of two serial romances with 12k loyal readers on the Radish Fiction app, a recently completed cozy fantasy novel in the querying process, and an in-progress fantasy trilogy. She loves playing with genre in both her reading and her writing, focusing heavily on themes of healthy relationships, personal growth, mental illness, and practical magick. She lives in Madison, WI, with her husband and golden retriever, Nugget. If she’s not writing, she’s watching Korean Dramas or playing cozy video games.

Creative Writing Camp Gr 6-8 2026 (20 Jul 2026)

for writers entering grades 6-8 in Fall 2026

Led by accomplished writing coaches who tailor activities to the age and interests of each group, Creative Writing Camps provide young writers with the time, space, support, and community they need to nurture their passion for writing.

Each day includes some light-hearted activities, age-appropriate lessons on the craft of writing and, best of all, time to write. The grounds outdoors provide a lovely setting for gathering inspiration and listening to the writer within. We work outdoors as much as the weather will allow.

During the week, our writers share their work with others in a small writing circle to receive valuable input and support. Many list this as their favorite part of the week because they may not have writing friends at school or in their neighborhood. Friendships form quickly and last beyond the end of our week at camp.
